Level 2 Video Workshop
The Ask
The stakeholders’ expectation was to have a series of instructor led training courses that would be subject focused. This particular one focuses on video production. I started by assisting another Instructional Designer, but he left the company before completion and I took over to deliver the final iteration.
The Level 2 Video Engineering and Camera Hands-On Workshop focuses on teaching the necessary skills for participants to become Level 2 Video Certified within the company. This two day workshop emphasized manual training utilizing a series of job aids and instructor facilitation. Attendees set up and operated various video production system components. This workshop concluded with a series of practical exercises designed to give each attendee the opportunity to use their newly acquired skills in a realistic setting.
The Plan
This training course was a highly technical course to construct and was developed using a “round-robin” approach where groups of attendees would move between stations. We also added what we called “layers” to the concept in that there would be several rounds where each layer would build upon the previous layer, eventually culminating in a set of scenario based exercises.
Once the list of training needs were established by the subject matter experts (SME’s) my contribution to course development was the creation of the job aids & quick starts that would be used in class. I built out numerous versions of both the Instructor and Participant Guides and assisted in the creation and editing of images and various pieces of collateral for use within the course.
Early on we struggled with how to give attendees a functionally realistic way of practicing and performing camera moves. Several ideas were proposed, each with its own set of challenges. I chose to think outside of the box and came up with the solution of using a train set that attendees would then be able to chase with the camera as it moved around the track. I would then go on to add small cut out figures to the train that they could work to keep within the frame.
Finalizing the Course
I took over control of the project prior to going into the Beta test. The Beta test gave us a final look at all of the components that would be used in running the course and one last time to make necessary updates and tweaks before running our T3 (Train The Trainer) session. At this point, all materials were expected to be in their final state, including the print materials and the entire kit of equipment that would travel with the course.
